Gust Maps
February 27, 2025
Gust Maps are marine forecast maps that display the expected peak wind gusts across a coastal or offshore area. Unlike average wind forecasts, they show short-duration increases in wind speed that can load sails, affect steering, and change sea conditions quickly.
For boaters, gust maps help identify squalls, frontal bands, headlands, valleys, and other areas where conditions may be stronger than the general forecast suggests. Comparing Wind Gust with Wind Speed supports safer reefing decisions, anchorage choice, watchkeeping, and Weather Routing on longer passages.
In PredictWind, gust data can be viewed alongside wind, rain, wave, and pressure layers in the Forecast App, web forecasts, and Offshore App GRIB downloads. High-resolution views, including 1km Wind Maps where available, are especially useful near complex coastlines and local acceleration zones.
