1km Wind Maps
February 26, 2025
1km Wind Maps are high-resolution marine wind forecasts that show predicted wind speed and direction on a one-kilometre grid. For sailors, power boaters and offshore crews, this finer scale helps reveal local acceleration zones, wind shadows, sea-breeze effects and coastal funnelling that broader global models may smooth out.
Their value is greatest near land, islands, headlands and complex coastlines, where small changes in wind can affect sail choice, fuel use, comfort and safe navigation. Boaters use them to compare Wind Speed, assess Wind Direction, and feed better decisions into Weather Routing before committing to a passage or anchorage.
In PredictWind, 1km Wind Maps complement wider-area models such as ECMWF, GFS and ICON, giving a detailed coastal view in the Forecast App and web forecasts. They are especially useful alongside gust, wave and tidal information, and can support Departure Planning when choosing a favourable weather window.
