Marina in Tierra del Fuego
Puerto Turístico (Tourist Port), Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina The port of Ushuaia The port of Ushuaia is the southernmost commercial port in the world and is located in the bay of the same name, on the north bank of the Beagle Channel, extreme South of Argentina. Its location is strategic due to the bio-oceanic integration that it enables, to the central position with respect to the southern maritime routes via the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean and its proximity to the Antarctic Peninsula. From a tourist point of view, its location is privileged due to its scenic environment -conjunction of the sea, the Andes and the subantarctic native forest-, its location in the very center of the city, its proximity to the airport complex international in nature that allows the arrival of large aircraft, the availability of tourist and commercial services in the city and a recent and growing specialization in the attention of cruise ships by the intervening agents. The facilities of the new commercial dock were inaugurated on May 14, 1999; It has a dock length of 520 m in Sectors 1, 2 and 3 with a mooring system for bollards -one every 22.80 m- and a maximum draft of 10 m. In Sector 4 the length of the dock is 164 m, with the same mooring system -one every 20 m- and a maximum draft of 4 m (Provincial Directorate of Ports, s / f). The facilities of the port allow ships to obtain all the necessary services - commercial dock94, roadstead, dock for small boats, pilotage, fiscal warehouse, meteorology, official time, provision of drinking water, electricity, stowage and services of watchmen, maritime agencies and maritime suppliers, mechanical elements, supplies sion of fuels and lubricants, medical assistance, telephone, tourist information - Antarctic Office and Secretariat of Tourism and Culture of Ushuaia-, postal postal agency, security service, customs, migration, collection and treatment of waste and safety in navigation (Daverio, 2002). The Port of Ushuaia fulfills different functions according to the itineraries operated by the shipping companies and / or shipowners: base port, embarkation port, return port and port of call. The possibility of retaining the current demand for ships and attracting the arrival of new shipping companies as well as generating income from the requirements of different services by them will depend both on the capacity of the local business community to generate the provision of goods and specialized services as well as the ability of governments to establish operating conditions competitive and predictable in the short, medium and long term. The articulation of the port community and local actors -elements of the cruise industry- and the coordinated promotion of these elements would make it possible to optimize revenues in our destiny. Of all the functions of the port, the most appreciated is that of the base port, although this function often requires more infrastructure and equipment.
