Windlass Chain
January 16, 2025
Windlass chain is calibrated anchor chain sized and graded to run correctly over a windlass gypsy or chainwheel when lowering or recovering the anchor. It forms the all-chain section of the rode, joining the anchor to the vessel through the bow roller, and must match the windlass specification for link diameter, pitch, strength grade and galvanised finish.
Correct windlass chain is critical to safe anchoring because poor fit can jump, jam or damage the gypsy under load. It works with the Anchor, Anchor Windlass and Anchoring Scope to provide secure holding in wind, swell and current. Inspect regularly for corrosion, worn links, twisted sections and suspect shackles before relying on it overnight or offshore.
Before choosing an anchorage, check forecast wind shifts, sea state and tidal flow in PredictWind so the chain loads remain within your ground tackle’s limits. In exposed anchorages, allowing for gusts, veering wind and tide changes helps decide how much chain to deploy and whether to reset before conditions deteriorate.
