Shackles

January 16, 2025

Shackles are U-shaped or D-shaped metal connectors with a removable pin, used aboard boats to join load-bearing components such as chain, rope, wire, anchors, blocks, and deck fittings. Marine shackles are commonly made from galvanised or stainless steel and are selected by size, shape, working load limit, and corrosion resistance.

Correct shackle choice is critical because a single failed connector can compromise anchoring, mooring, towing, or rigging systems. Use rated shackles that match the expected load, align them with the direction of pull, and secure screw pins with wire or seizing where vibration may loosen them. Shackles are especially important in Ground Tackle, between Anchor Chain and fittings, and in high-load tasks such as Towing.

Related hardware includes swivels, thimbles, chain hooks, and snap shackles, each suited to different movement and load requirements. Before a passage or exposed anchorage, check shackles for bent pins, worn threads, elongation, rust, and mismatched metals; PredictWind forecasts and routing can help you anticipate conditions that may increase loads on deck gear and anchoring systems.
