Northeast

February 27, 2025

Northeast, abbreviated NE, is the compass direction halfway between North and East, equal to 045° on a compass rose. In marine navigation it may describe a course, bearing, sector, or the direction from which wind or sea is coming; a northeast wind blows from the northeast.

For boaters, reading northeast correctly is essential for plotting a Heading, interpreting Wind Direction, and assessing whether seas will be favourable or uncomfortable on a planned leg. Confusing “steering northeast” with “wind from the northeast” can lead to poor sail selection, unexpected slamming, or unsafe approaches to a lee shore.

PredictWind forecasts show northeast winds, waves, and currents as directional arrows and model data across maps, tables, and GRIB views. In Weather Routing, a NE flow may favour one tack, alter arrival timing, or create wind-against-tide conditions that are best avoided.
