Illumination
February 27, 2025
Illumination in a maritime context is the amount and quality of light available to see, be seen, and work safely on or around a vessel. It includes natural light from the sun or moon, plus artificial sources such as deck lights, cockpit lighting, searchlights, instrument backlighting, and mandatory vessel lights.
Effective illumination helps crew identify hazards, read instruments, handle lines, and maintain situational awareness during night passages, anchoring, berthing, or poor-visibility conditions. It must support, not obscure, the required display of Navigation Lights and Running Lights, while avoiding glare that reduces lookout effectiveness or compromises Radar watchkeeping.
On passage, illumination planning is linked to moon phase, cloud, rain, fog, and battery capacity. PredictWind forecasts can help you anticipate darker night-time conditions, compare Cloud Cover, and decide when extra deck lighting or reduced speed is prudent, especially offshore or in confined waters.
