Head

January 16, 2025

A head is the toilet compartment or toilet system on a boat, yacht, or ship. The term comes from traditional sailing vessels, where basic facilities were positioned near the bow, or head, of the vessel. Modern heads may be manual, electric, vacuum, or freshwater-flush systems.

For boaters, the head is a key onboard system for hygiene, comfort, and environmental compliance. Correct operation prevents blockages, odours, leaks, and accidental discharge, especially when connected to a Holding Tank. Regular checks around hoses, valves, and the Bilge Pump area are important before any Offshore passage.

Good seamanship includes briefing crew on head use, conserving water, and knowing local discharge rules. When planning longer trips, allow for holding capacity, pump-out access, and sea conditions that may affect safe use or maintenance while underway.
