Gunwhale

January 16, 2025

A gunwhale, more commonly written gunwale and pronounced “gunnel”, is the reinforced upper edge of a boat’s side where the hull meets the deck or sheer line. It runs from bow to stern and adds stiffness, protection and a secure edge for fittings, crew movement and handling lines.

For boaters, the gunwhale matters because it is often leaned on, stepped over, loaded by mooring lines and exposed to impacts from docks or tenders. Sound gunwhales help preserve the strength of the Hull, influence safe movement relative to Freeboard, and work with a Fender to reduce topside damage alongside.

Before passages or rough-weather departures, inspect gunwhales for cracks, loose fasteners, corrosion, soft timber or damaged rubbing strakes. Forecast wind, waves and Sea State in PredictWind can help you anticipate spray, boarding loads and dockside motion that may stress this part of the boat.
