Forecast Confidence
February 27, 2025
Forecast confidence is the assessed reliability of a marine weather forecast for a specific area, time and parameter, such as wind, swell, rain or pressure. In boating terms, it indicates how much trust a skipper should place in the predicted conditions when making navigation, routing or safety decisions.
High confidence supports firmer passage plans, sail choices and arrival timing, while low confidence calls for wider safety margins, alternative ports and more frequent updates. It is closely linked to Forecast Accuracy, the behaviour of each Forecast Model, and decisions made during Departure Planning.
Confidence improves when multiple trusted models agree and recent observations support the forecast. In PredictWind, comparing ECMWF, GFS, ICON and high-resolution maps helps reveal uncertainty before you commit. Offshore crews can download updated GRIB data to reassess confidence as conditions develop at sea.
