Electric Windlass

January 16, 2025

An electric windlass is a powered deck winch used to deploy and recover a boat’s anchor rode, typically driving a chainwheel or capstan with a 12 V or 24 V motor. Installed on the foredeck or in the anchor locker, it handles chain, rope, or a combination rode to reduce manual effort when anchoring.

As a type of Anchor Windlass, it improves safety and control when setting or weighing anchor, especially on heavier cruising yachts and powerboats. Correct sizing must match the Anchor Chain, rode length, vessel displacement, and expected Anchoring Scope, while the operator avoids using the gearbox as the sole load holder once set.

Reliable operation depends on sound cabling, battery capacity, clean terminals, and regular rinsing after salt exposure. Forecasting wind shifts, gusts and tide before choosing an anchorage helps avoid shock loads; PredictWind forecasts and tidal tools support these decisions when planning where to anchor overnight.
