Anchor Rode

January 16, 2025

Anchor rode is the length of rope, chain, or a rope-and-chain combination that connects a boat to its anchor. It transfers load from the vessel to the seabed and keeps the anchor lying at a low angle so it can dig in and hold.

A correctly sized rode is central to safe overnight anchoring, storm preparation, and leaving the boat unattended. The rode must match the vessel, seabed, depth, and forecast conditions; too little length or worn fittings can cause dragging. It works with the Anchor, Anchor Chain, and Anchoring Scope to provide shock absorption, chafe resistance, and holding power.

Before choosing an anchorage, check expected wind shifts, gusts, waves, and Tidal Current, especially where wind against tide can load the rode sharply. PredictWind forecasts, wave maps, and tidal tools help assess shelter and decide how much rode to deploy, while regular inspection of rope, chain, shackles, and swivels keeps the system reliable.
