Aft

January 16, 2025

Aft means towards the stern, or rear, of a vessel. It is a directional term used on deck, below, and in navigation instructions: moving aft means moving back along the boat, while something fitted aft is located nearer the stern than another reference point.

Clear use of aft helps crew move efficiently and safely, especially when docking, reefing, anchoring, or responding to an emergency. It distinguishes the after end of the boat from the Stern itself, the forward end or Bow, and areas such as the Aft Deck where lines, tenders, or boarding gear may be handled.

In passage planning and routing, aft is most relevant to onboard organisation rather than weather data. Knowing what is stowed or operated aft—helm controls, steering gear, fuel systems, lockers, or safety equipment—supports quick decisions when conditions change, whether you are following a coastal forecast or an offshore weather route in PredictWind.
