Running Lights: A Vital Component of Maritime Safety

Running lights are an integral part of the navigational system of any maritime vessel, from small boats to large ships. These lights provide critical information regarding the size, type, and direction of a vessel under nighttime or low visibility conditions thereby preventing possible collisions.

Distinguishing Running Lights from Other Lights on a Vessel

Unlike the headlights on a car that primarily function to illuminate the road ahead, running lights on a ship are designed to signal its presence, orientation, and status to other vessels. They do not illuminate the path ahead but broadcast necessary information to enhance maritime safety. Running lights mainly include sidelights (red for port/left side and green for starboard/right side), a sternlight (white light visible from behind the ship), and a masthead light (white light visible from the front and sides). In some cases, vessels also use additional lights, such as towing lights, all-round lights, and special flashing lights.

The purpose of running lights is unequivocally tied to safety. Running lights are required to be used from sunset to sunrise and also during times of restricted visibility such as fog, heavy rain, or dust storms. However, the exact requirements for which lights need to be displayed can vary, based on the size, type, and operation of the vessel. For example, a sailing yacht under power at night would show a different set of lights compared to a large commercial vessel. Compliance with these regulations ensures that a vessel can be correctly identified in terms of its size, operation, and direction, thereby reducing the chances of maritime mishaps.
